Occupancy

Occupancy is defined as the number of pedestrians at a given time within a delineated area. Occupancy can be measured by several techniques, such as people counters, mobile phone tracking and Bluetooth proximity detectors. This article deals with occupancy measurement derived from people counters. Crowd analysis uses different techniques to estimate the number of pedestrians in an area and is not covered in this report.

People counters vary in their technique of measuring the flow of pedestrians. Any counter that is capable of measuring the flow of pedestrians in two or more directions can be used to record counts that can be used for occupancy calculations.

The calculation of occupancy is achieved by subtracting the cumulative sum of pedestrians exiting an area from the cumulative sum of pedestrians entering the same area.

Prior to the arrival of the green pedestrians there was an occupancy of 9, comprising the 6 blue and 3 red pedestrians.

Occupancy Calculation After the green arrivals and red departures there is an occupancy of 8.

This is calculated from previous occupancy (9) plus the green arrivals (2) and subtracting the red departures (3).

Occupancy = 9 + 2 - 3 = 8.

This process is repeated throughout the day to calculate occupancy values at specified intervals.
